Why I’m standing

I’m standing to be your Labour candidate so that we can build a general election campaign to win and so that we have a Labour government to be proud of.

To win on a national scale Labour must win in Wolverhampton. Through my work on Labour’s ruling body, I have been central to making Labour general election ready.

I’m Black Country born and bred. My granddad worked in the foundry here and along with my father helped establish the Bangladeshi community in the West Midlands in the 70s and 80s at a time when Thatcher’s government made it clear we weren’t wanted.

When I was 19, I co-founded the Bangladeshi Youth Organisation in Walsall, setting up homework clubs and leisure activities for kids whose families were struggling.

Today my activism, whether in our communities, on the picket line, or in the Labour Party is more important than ever.

The cost-of-living crisis is hitting us hard – and working-class communities are feeling it the most.

The people of Wolverhampton West didn’t cause this cost of living crisis and they shouldn’t be the ones paying for it. I will do everything it takes, working with everyone in Labour, to get the Tories out of Wolverhampton once and for all and working with the local Labour council to Win for Wolverhampton. I am the candidate to win that election.

Throughout my working life I have shifted between roles and sectors. I am currently a part time taxi driver and a part time Parliamentary staffer. In the past I have managed small businesses and understand the intense pressures they are facing.

We need to build a united Party so we can build a government that will stand up for local business rather than international monopolies. We need a Labour government that has does not hesitate to stand up for Universal Credit claimants. We need a government that will back trade unions and expand workers’ rights. But we also need a local candidate that can win these arguments on a local level - I’m that candidate. I have the experience, knowledge and courage to win for you.

So please join me in helping to build a winning Labour campaign for Wolverhampton West. Vote for me, Mish Rahman, to be your Labour candidate in Wolverhampton West at the next general election.
